André Rieu plays a waltz by Anthony Hopkins

Yes, Sir Anthony Hopkins, who played Hannibal Lecter in ‘Silence of the Lambs.’ Sir Anthony is in the audience, and he’s hearing it for the first time.

  1. Hi, I am looking for a new piano with a budget of 6k. The teacher recommended Wilhelm Tell 124 Geneva. Is this a good model? Or should i get the Yamaha U1J?

    • Hi,

Thanks for writing. I’ve been really quiet I didn’t think anybody reads this blog anymore!

I presume the piano is for your child? Just starting lessons? If so then might I humbly suggest that you consider getting a good reconditioned upright, and a taller one at that (say 132cm). For 6k you could pick up something really decent from Mr Kwan at Emmanuel & Sons. That’s assuming he already has an instrument on hand and already ready to go. If not then you could ask him to help you source for a piano, preferably a good European brand. In recent years I’ve seen really a good Petrof and a Bosendorfer in his incoming stock.

As for the twoianos you asked about, well, the smaller Yamaha uprights (such as the U1J) are not to my taste and I have never played on a Wilhelm Tell 124 Geneva (which is the same size as the U1J). So I can’t, in all fairness, make a recommendation. I’m sure both are well-made and will sound and play decent if properly cared for. Either will be fine for a beginner.

I know my response isn’t very helpful, sorry! 😦
