My aging eyes need good, flicker-free lighting so anything that uses ordinary fluorescent lamps is not good.
I used an Ikea Regolit floor lamp over the keyboard of the K-8, as shown in the picture below.
The Regolit cost SGD89, so it was a relatively inexpensive yet attractive solution. What I really like about it is that the music and the keyboard are fairly evenly illuminated. I put a 100W incandescent bulb in it and added an Ikea dimmer switch. If positioned correctly I figure that the arch will be high enough to clear the Omega’s lid on full stick.
I looked around for alternatives anyway, and came up with two other much more expensive alternatives.
The first is Koncept Technologies’ i-Tower High Power LED floor lamp.
It has a RRP of SGD200, and is available from the dealers listed here. Further discounts are still likely, so to try and establish a street price I visited Best Denki and Challenger in IMM, both of whom are named in the list of dealers. Best Denki had no clue what I was talking about, even after I showed them the brochure. Challenger only had the normal power Z-Bar desk lamp. The i-Tower High Power floor lamp is best because it has a broader beam spread, and four brightness levels. I don’t know if it is enough to also illuminate the keyboard sufficiently or evenly; probably not.
The most expensive option is the RATstands double LEDlight for conductor stands and grand pianos (scroll down after reaching the page).
You can buy online from RATstands. Either way the cost is GBP200 for the lamp. To this you have to add the cost of your choice of power supply — standard mains plug-pack (GBP25), dimmable power supply (GBP90), rechargeable NiMH battery pack (GBP100) with fast charger (GBP60). If you get Frank Brothers to bring it in for you they will charge an additional 10 – 20% for shipping, about what RATstands charges if you order direct from them. Ouch!
The main drawbacks with the RATstands solution are the cost, likely insufficient illumination of the keyboard, and the fact that it has to be removed from the music desk when closing up the piano.
Hmmm…looks like I’ll hold off on getting anything new until I’ve tried out the Regolit with the Omega.
